Revisiting Judy Berlin – An Interview With Edie Falco

Posted by filmcatcher1 on August 6, 2008

Boasting an all-star cast of New York actors including Edie Falco and Madeline Kahn, and shot in sumptuous black-and-white, JUDY BERLIN is an incredibly sensitive and humorous debut by writer/director Eric Mendelsohn. Winner of the 1999 Directing award at the Sundance Film Festival, the film went on to be an opening night film for New Directors/New Films. Sadly, it was also Madeline Kahn’s final film.

We caught up with Edie Falco at New York’s Film Society of Lincoln Center where the actress was presenting a special screening of her 1999 film Judy Berlin with director and friend Eric Mendelsohn. Edie chats with us about making the film in her home town, working in front of the camera and on stage, and never expecting what life has in store.

Director Gregg Araki spoke with FilmCatcher at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival about the original impetus behind his 1992 buddy-movie-gone-bad “The Living End”, the heady social and political context it hearkens back to, and the ways in which his movies as a whole do and don’t fit within the “queer cinema” rubric.

Baghead-Directors Mark and Jay Duplass

Posted by filmcatcher1 on June 25, 2008

Directors Mark and Jay Duplass chat with FilmCatcher at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival about their new film BAGHEAD.

The brother filmmakers return to the Festival (their film The Puffy Chair played in 2005) with a hilarious, tongue-in-cheek, genre-twisting comedy that explores the minutiae of relationship dynamics among a group of desperate actor friends and roasts a gamut of indie films in the process.
